Buddy found an e-newspaper the bunch was allowed to read in Cyberia, other than their school e-books that is. There was an editorial in there with some information on the measures humans were thinking of using to counteract the threat to the climate.
One look at the proposed solutions and the bunch knew the real one was nowhere in sight. One theory suggested spewing millions of tons of sulphur into the air to have a cooling effect on the atmosphere.
‘But they are forgetting about the acid rains a move like that would generate,’ Brews pointed out.
‘Neglorant 730s,’ labeled Milli Ann.
Another one talked about bringing deep, nutrient-rich waters to the surface to feed huge algae blooms who’d suck up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sink it to the bottom of the ocean as they died.
Brews could only shake his head at that one. ‘Pass; the method sounds like a mere Band-Aid to me.’
A glaciologist had put up a proposal for wrapping Greenland in a blanket. By covering the valleys that form darker areas, protecting them from the Sun's heat, he hoped to significantly slow the melting of the glaciers.
‘Talk about sweeping dirt under the rug…correction, blanket,’ observed Buddy about that one.
Meanwhile, an engineer believed that clouds could be created to protect the world from the wrath of the Sun. He proposed forming clouds above the ocean by sending salt into the atmosphere.
‘This one’s showing error 404 on commonsense,’ Milli Ann sighed out. ‘Like you could create clouds and expect them to be obedient enough not to dump all the liquid sunshine they were holding,’ she inferred.
Yet another recommended putting a ring of sunlight-scattering particles, or micro-spacecraft, in orbit around the Equator. The idea was that the ring would reduce the amount of solar radiation hitting the planet and counteract some of the warming induced by greenhouse gases.
Brews was slow-clapping this one. ‘Outdeed, man,’ he said, ‘Albert Non-stein had failed to respecognize the fact that a wild idea like that was also going to be an expensive one, with a potential price tag of trillions of dollars.’
Another one went right into the bunch’s anti-bucket list: A physicist believed the world could have a never-ending source of power if they sent thousands of satellites into space to gather the Sun's power, and then beam the energy down to Earth as microwaves.
Hempsy animatedly prayed at this one. ‘God, please make them leave space alone. We really don’t want any more debris out there.’
But Mlli Ann was transfixed at the idea of microwaves being beamed to Earth. ‘I mumbly peg yo garden, but microwaves? Weren’t those waves hazardous to health? Didn’t the humans go “just nuke it” whenever they wanted to cook or heat food in microwave ovens?’
Buddy tried to make sense of it, ‘They probably might be proposing safe microwaves.’
Nonetheless, Hempsy still wasn’t sold to the idea. ‘Even if I convinced myself that the microwaves they were planning to beam down were hazard-free, wouldn’t those space-based solar panels have a ridiculously high maintenance costs?
